What Do You Ask Board Candidates? No ... Really ... What?

Now, maybe more than ever, leaders need the partnership of smart, strategic, and supportive boards to weather the challenges being hurled at nonprofits.

As with any sudden changes, like natural disasters and pandemics, we need to know that the strategic and generative muscles of our boards are in excellent tone – flexible enough to stretch to meet the current moment, strong enough to jump into action, and stable enough to balance amid shifting priorities.

And in these moments, as we are certainly counting our blessings, we probably also notice a few capacities we wish were present or that not everyone is the greatest fit for the task at hand.

Whenever I bumped into an issue with someone I had hired, I could invariably remember a moment in their interview that I had let pass, chalked up to nerves, or deemed unimportant. Or, I could think of something I should have asked but hadn’t.

I see board interviews the same way. Anything but the most thorough of interview processes will deliver too much variability on the other end. And you need good questions that enable you and the board candidate to on the same page and excited at the prospect of working together.
