The first time I stepped on a balance board, I thought it would be easy [insert uproarious laughter here].
You guessed right. It wasn’t, and I learned (and relearned) a lot – like balance isn’t static. It’s constant motion – flailing and obvious at first and then micro-movements and subtle with practice.
I facilitated a board retreat recently where the group worked the same way – finding its equilibrium in the current moment through small alterations to its practices.
It reminded me that good governance isn’t like striking a pose that works in every situation; it’s about adjusting as a team to ensure you are flexible, responsive, and supportive in moving the mission forward with care.

Balance, whether physical or organizational, isn’t about perfection. It’s about awareness – knowing where your center of gravity is, noticing when you’ve leaned too far, and finding your way back to center (hopefully before you hit the floor).
Until next time,
