I'm sometimes amazed by how much energy goes into deciding whether some aspect of organizational work is governance or management.
I hear staff claim that some board members are way too deep in the weeds (they are in management territory!).
I also hear board members say that they can’t get important details to govern properly (why should getting straightforward information be so difficult?).
Often, they seem really upset.
To me, some issues just aren’t one or the other. Not management. Not governance.
They are what I call “the Blurry Third,” a mix of the two – in need of being teased apart in partnership – issues we should figure out together.
It’s where capable, well-intentioned people can occasionally step on each other’s toes.
If this sounds familiar, you’re not doing it wrong.
You’re just working in the fog.

Until next time,
P.S. If you’ve ever wondered, “Is this governance or management?” – you’re already in it.
